Dear Red and White Community,
Happy Holidays!
One of my favorite moments of the holiday season is the traditional reminder of reflection and the opportunity to consider where I’ve been, what I’ve learned and how I’ve been blessed. I hope at some point, you get a moment to do this as well.
Six months ago, I officially pulled into a parking spot off of Broadway and started a new chapter of my life. Over this time, I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed getting to know our school, our faculty/staff, our community and most importantly you, our Wildcat student body. Given the chance to contribute to our historic Red and White column, I wanted to share a few things I have learned so far about being a Wildcat and express my gratitude for the opportunity to be your Head of School.
- I’ve learned that being a Wildcat is a big deal. I feel this every day, and I hope you do, too. As I walk the sidewalks, hallways, and classrooms of our amazing school, I feel the significance of an institution that has existed for nearly 170 years. Our school has meant so much to so many people. It has shaped the lives, communities, families and homes of our community, state and world. The people who came before us, Edwin Land, John Fox Slater, Reverend Gulliver, a vast network of engaged alumni (many of whom still work on campus), your parents, are shining examples of the power of this place and a tremendous reminder of our responsibility to carry this legacy forward. As a student, being at NFA sets you apart. It distinguishes you as different, unique, special and connected. Carry this difference to the good you will create.
- I’ve learned that Wildcats take care of each other. Over the past six months, I have been blown away at the power and beauty of our community. Whether it is the simple act of watching upperclassmen welcome freshmen to orientation, the daily rhythm of seeing you interact at passing or the raw emotion of a moment of campus sadness, I’ve come to know a place that leans into support, generosity, kindness and family. A community is only as strong as the relationships it maintains–I am proud of how we take care of each other and the welcome you have me and my family as we joined your team.
- I’ve learned that Wildcats have no limits. While a lot is said about what young people can and can’t do, NFA Wildcats know that nothing can deter a committed goal coupled with a hard working spirit and vast network of support. Wildcats believe in each other. Wildcats believe in themselves. I have watched you sign up for classes you once doubted you were capable of taking, tryout for teams despite the risk of failure and form relationships with people you had never met. I have seen you get accepted to our nation’s most prestigious universities, win state championships, make school athletic history and masterfully perform on our stage. The truth is, hang onto this, Wildcats have no limits! We dream big, work hard, refuse to tap out and always find ways to encourage each other for the next opportunity.
Thank you for an amazing start to the year. I hope you enjoy your holiday break. I’m looking forward to 2024 and the learning that lies ahead!
With great Wildcat Pride,
Dr. Quesnel
